What is the Dark Web?
To put it simply, it is the black market of the internet, used to hide criminal activity.
The internet is actually made of up of three different layers: the surface web, the deep web, and the dark web.
The surface web: web pages that show up using search engines such as Google. This is the internet to which the public has complete access.
The deep web: web pages which search engines can’t access. These are accessed via passwords and authorization, such as business application sites and private company networks in “the cloud”.
The dark web: A network of anonymous online activity and websites on the Internet. The dark web may only be accessed by special software and is completely hidden from the public internet. This is the perfect place to for criminals to fence their stolen treasure, your login credentials, for money.
Why Worry About the Dark Web?
The dark web is made up of various digital communities, and while there are a few legitimate purposes for the dark web, it is estimated that over 50 percent of all sites on the dark web today are used for criminal activities, including the disclosure and sale of digital credentials (i.e. user names & passwords).
Cyber criminals are no different than any other criminal. They are just opportunists looking to steal valuables from the easy targets. Cyber criminals are mostly steeling data, like usernames and passwords and then selling that data to make their quick buck. This stolen data is posted for sale on the Dark Web. Whenever you hear about a data breach at places like Equifax, or Home Depot, or Starwood / Marriott Hotels, all that stolen data is being sold on the Dark Web.
Remembering complex passwords is nearly impossible. We’ve all reused passwords and that’s what the thieves count on to make it easy for them. If anyone in your company is re-using a password or only changes the digit on the end, it’s like leaving your front door unlocked. Is your IT guy addressing this or are you just assuming he’s got it covered?
If you don’t know what’s out there, how can you possibly protect against it?
You need an early warning system. You need something that tells you when an employee’s password is no longer safe. The credit card company calls you when they see suspicious activity with your card.
