Just a few weeks ago, we met with a prospective client in their medical offices.

They wanted to switch IT companies because rather than their current company taking care of their IT issues for them, they would instead just tell their client how they could fix the issues themselves. This left us scratching our heads. You don’t see doctors telling their patients how to perform their own surgery. Doctors spend years getting an education and years treating patients so they can directly implement care and treatment because their patients are not equipped to provide their own care. It should be the same with any IT company; we’re trained to do our job, and we should be expected to do it. This client saw the value in having a technology partner who takes what it does seriously and makes sure it’s using that knowledge to give its clients the service that they can’t provide for themselves. In contrast, we had another meeting with a prospective client who was a bit more reluctant to let us do what we do best. We did an assessment and found that his system likely haven’t been working properly for years. During that time, he has created an environment of frustrated employees, which in turn, led to disappointed patients who weren’t getting the care or services they needed.

How to Add Modifiers in Medisoft in Two Simple Ways

Did you know Medisoft has the ability to add additional modifiers, allowing you to use more than one?

This quick video (2 mins) will show you how to add and/or default modifiers in your claims. This will also show you how to move your column next to procedure codes in Medisoft, to make it more convenient for you to access.

How does this relate to Telehealth?

(The following information was updated on April 6, 2020 after a correction by CMS was published on April 3, 2020)

The following is a list of Telehealth related Modifiers that may be applied to a claim:

  • 95 Modifier – Synchronous telemedicine service is defined as a real-time interaction between a physician or other qualified healthcare professional and a patient who is located at a distant site from the physician or other qualified healthcare professional.
    (When billing professional claims to Medicare for all telehealth services with dates of services on or after March 6, 2020, and for the duration of the Public Health Emergency (PHE), bill with Place of Service (POS) equal to what it would have been had the service been furnished in-person with modifier 95, indicating that the service rendered was actually performed via telehealth)
  • GT Modifier – The GT modifier is used to indicate a service was rendered via synchronous telecommunication. Distant site services billed under CAH method II on institutional claims still require modifier GT.
  • GQ Modifier – For Alaska or Hawaii only. Services delivered via asynchronous telecommunications system. This modifier may be submitted with telehealth services. Generally, interactive audio and video communications must be used to permit real-time communication between the distant site physician/practitioner and the Medicare beneficiary

COVID-19 Specific Modifier to Indicate the Waiver of Deductibles, Co-payments and Co-insurance for Medicare Patients

(The following information was added on April 9, 2020 to include information provided by CMS in a Special Edition Newsletter from the Medicare Learning Network dated April 7, 2020)

Providers are to apply modifier CS on applicable claim lines to identify COVID-19 testing-related services that are not subject to cost sharing under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. Covered services include medical visits that that result in an order for or administration of a COVID-19 test; are related to furnishing or administering such a test or to the evaluation of an individual for purposes of determining the need for such a test. The effective date for modifier CS is for services performed between March 18, 2020 through the end of the Public Health Emergency.

For professional claims, physicians and practitioners who did not initially submit claims with the CS modifier must notify their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) and request to resubmit applicable claims with dates of service on or after 3/18/2020 with the CS modifier to get 100% payment. 

For institutional claims, providers, including hospitals, CAHs, RHCs, and FQHCs, who did not initially submit claims with the CS modifier must resubmit applicable claims submitted on or after 3/18/2020, with the CS modifier to visit lines to get 100% payment.

How to Copy Data from One Practice to Another

How do I get all of my information transferred over from one practice to another?

If you have recently created a new practice in your Medisoft program, most likely the items you use the most are: Diagnosis Codes or Insurance information. Since you would need this in a new practice, this is the easiest way in your Medisoft program to copy this data over from one practice to another.

The Final Days of Windows 7 – Are You Prepared?

All technology is iterative. Whether we are talking about software or hardware, there will come a time when your current tools will no longer fit your needs. Deciding when to upgrade is always a bit of a guessing game. You could choose to be an early adapter, but that means you may be dealing with 1.0 bugs and other growing pains. Waiting too long to switch, however, can create much more serious problems.

Why You Should Be Preparing to Switch

An expiration date for making a change is exactly what Windows 7 users are facing right now. On January 14th, 2020, Windows will end support for Windows 7. Updates will stop, and the operating system will enter lame-duck status. Technically, you’ll still be able to use Windows 7 after that date, but if you’re one of the 40-plus percent of businesses who still use the platform, you need to think about switching as soon as possible. Here are a few key reasons why:

Ease of Integration

Your operating system may be the foundational platform from which every other desktop tool springs, but it’s far from the only software resource you rely on. In today’s world, every business needs a whole suite of services in order to run at their best. Sticking to an out-of-date operating system will cause your other programs to falter. Developers simply aren’t updating their software with an eye toward Windows 7. Over time, many of the applications essential to your operations will become unusable in Windows 7.

The same is true of hardware. New devices and components are released all the time, and they are all designed to work with the operating systems of today and tomorrow. Unfortunately, Windows 7 is quickly becoming yesterday’s operating system. Using Windows 7 with such hardware limits its capabilities. Eventually, it will become difficult to find hardware that’s compatible with Windows 7 at all.

Security Concerns

While hindering your performance is far from desirable, that pales in comparison to the safety risks you’ll be living with if you don’t upgrade in time. Once Microsoft ends support, security patches will cease. These patches are essential for combating the latest tactics used by hackers to break into your network. Without them, you are extremely vulnerable.

Even worse, hackers know to target businesses and individuals who fail to upgrade to current operating systems. They correctly reason that if somebody is foolish enough to use an outdated platform, they probably aren’t wise enough to have adequate defenses. Basically, an unsupported operating system is the equivalent of a “kick me” sign on your back, only this one reads: “hack me.”

Act Now or Cry Later

We are just about 6 months away from the death knell of Windows 7, so you may think you have time before a change is necessary. The truth is: You should act now so that once the final date arrives, you’ll have all of the machines ready to go. That’s especially true if you’re considering changing your service provider altogether, rather than simply migrating forward to Windows 10. If you need to transition your operating system, we are here to help guide you along the way. No matter what course of action you take, you have to act. Otherwise, you’ll be in deep trouble come January 2020.
