Cyber Extortion: What It Is and How It Threatens Your Business

There’s a growing threat out there that’s keeping many business owners awake at night: cyber extortion.

Is this on your radar? If not, it should be—because it could one day have serious consequences for your business.

What Exactly is Cyber Extortion?

Cyber extortion is a form of cybercrime where malicious actors threaten to damage your business by compromising its digital assets or sensitive data unless a ransom is paid. These attacks frequently involve ransomware, which is a type of malware that encrypts your data and holds it hostage until the ransom is paid.

In some cases, cybercriminals take it a step further by stealing data and threatening to release it on dark web leak sites if their demands aren’t met—a tactic known as double extortion.

According to a 2024 report, the number of cyber extortion victims has surged by 77% over the past year. Even more concerning is that small businesses are four times more likely to be targeted than larger companies. This trend is especially alarming because small businesses often have fewer resources to defend themselves against these kinds of attacks.

In just the first quarter of this year, 1,046 businesses were hit by double extortion. While that number might not seem huge, the actual figure is likely much higher, with many incidents going unreported, falling into what experts refer to as the “dark number.”

The reality is that businesses of all sizes and sectors are potential targets. However, some industries are more frequently attacked than others. Sectors like manufacturing, professional, scientific, and technical services, as well as wholesale trade, are at the top of the list. Worryingly, the healthcare and social assistance sectors are also seeing a marked increase in attacks, despite the potential societal and political implications.

Cybercriminals are both opportunistic and strategic. They focus on regions with robust economic growth and common languages. For example, in the US alone, cyber extortion incidents have increased by 108%.

While the rise in cyber extortion is a growing concern, there are several steps you can take to protect your business. Here are some key strategies:

Back Up Your Data: Make sure you have a solid backup plan in place. Store critical data in an offline or offsite location, and regularly test your backup restoration process to ensure it works properly.

Keep Software Up to Date: Ensure that all devices, especially those connected to the internet, use the latest software versions.

Implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
Enhance your access controls with MFA. This adds an additional layer of security by requiring multiple forms of verification (like a code sent to a separate device) before granting access. Also, limit user access to only the systems necessary for their job functions.

Patch and Vulnerability Management:
Regularly update your systems to fix any known security vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals often exploit these weaknesses, so staying on top of patches can help prevent many attacks.

By understanding what cyber extortion is and how it operates, you can better prepare your business to defend against it. The key is to stay proactive.
