What My Company Culture Has Taught Me

Jana Flewellen

Jana Flewellen

Finance & Human Resources Manager

Company Culture is Not a Myth. It's the Inspiration for Great Work.

No matter how much (or how little) of our blog you might read, you’re likely well aware that at AZCOMP, we like to talk about our core values. We’ve got 9 of them, so there’s a lot to talk about. But I truly believe these core values allow our employees to do great work, which, in turn, translates to delivering phenomenal work to our clients (also one of our core values). This portion of our blog usually examines our business services and how they’re useful to our clients, but I think there’s a lot of usefulness in giving an inside look at how our core values affect our culture, and ultimately, the work we do.

As the Finance and Human Resources Manager, I see a different side of our operations than most others do. I have interactions with clients from an accounting standpoint rather than a technical standpoint, and much of my work also involves direct interaction with our internal team. I’m coming up on my sixth year at AZCOMP, and it’s been such a pleasure to witness the many different ways the company has grown.

I’m passionate in my belief that happy employees are more creative, efficient, and open. If you give them the chance to speak up, they will, and past experience tells me that giving someone the chance to feel like they’re being heard paves the way for feeling like they’re part of the team. That makes them want to be productive for their clients and their company.

That’s a wide net to cast, but it was well worth the effort. It’s incredible how loving where you work positively effects the work you do. That realization takes a lot of planning, reworking, and time to get just right. But once you’re there, you start to notice big waves everywhere in your business.

AZCOMP empowers its employees by giving them the tools, space, and mindset they need to succeed. Our core values are useful tools, our office space is conducive to creativity, and we always welcome input and ideas from everyone. But my favorite thing that happens amid all of this is that our team has become a family. We all feel a sense of ease and reliability in each other, but that doesn’t just go for our “work family.” We all have jobs to support our families, so why not bring them into it? All our families know each other, some spend time together, and overall, we all care about each other. We have a culture of unity, both inside and outside our walls, and it makes for a really great place to work.

So what does this mean for our clients?

It means that you can have full faith in the work we do for you. I already mentioned it, but it’s worth mentioning again. I truly believe that happy employees lead to great work because AZCOMP has shown me that it’s true. All of our clients can know they’re getting great work and services from our team because our team is truly happy with the work they do.

An Opportunity to be Better: The Lessons of 2020 Can Lead to Innovation

Keven Cluff

Keven Cluff

2020 was one wild year. Here we are, one month into 2021 and even though we may not be out of the woods yet, I think we all breathed a collective sign of relief when the clock struck midnight on December 31st and 2021 arrived. A new year always means a chance to start fresh, but we’d all be making a big mistake if we just ignored 2020 and treated it like a bad dream that didn’t happen. As nice as that sounds, the truth is, last year taught us so many valuable lessons that we can use to make the future fantastic.

I don’t think there’s any denying that the biggest lesson learned in 2020 is the entirely correct cliché that it pays to be prepared. The name of the game in 2020 was figuring out a way to make it easier to securely serve your patients outside of your office. The practices that already had the right tools in place for doing so were ready to charge forward when both their patients and their staff were no longer coming into their facility regularly. Other practices that we’re prepared for this kind of shift in process were caught unaware and left to play catch-up. These were two very different sides of the same coin, but no matter what side you might have been on, you likely benefited from a plethora of lessons learned in the process.

Having the technology that allows you to communicate with your patients en masse, gives them options for paying bills remotely, and sets up proper security for your staff working from home was the biggest factor that AZCOMP aimed to help practices implement in 2020. And it was incredibly exciting for us to witness many of our customers experience the positivity that making these changes brought to their business! The most rewarding part was helping them to understand that these aren’t just temporary changes – these are advancements that are going to benefit and help the business grow for years to come. We know that because we’ve seen it happen time and again.

At AZCOMP, we abide by yet another cliché that I’m proud to drop in here: We practice what we preach. When the crazy scramble to work remotely first launched on the world in March, we mobilized more than 30 of our employees to work from home in just half a day because we already had the systems in place to make it happen. We faced the challenge head on by already being equipped with the tools we needed to do so. In turn, we never missed a beat, and our customers never felt like they couldn’t rely on us to help them. We know the power of being prepared, so we always keep up with the latest next-step in preparation. And we’re here to make sure your business does the same.

No matter where you’ve landed at the end of 2020, you’ve likely learned some valuable lessons that you won’t soon forget. And if you’ve worked with AZCOMP during this past year, hopefully you feel more prepared to make the most of those lessons and the changes that resulted from them in this new year.

That’s what we always strive for.

But remember, 2021 is just the beginning – these remote systems and pumped up security measures aren’t going anywhere. They’re great tools for making your business better than it’s ever been before, pandemic or not. So it’s never too late to dive into implementing them. And we’ll be here to help you do just that for many years to come.

The Complete Guide to the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)

Whether you are just beginning or have been participating in MIPS for years, this information will be helpful for you!

AZCOMP is dedicated to providing you with useful and relevant information relating to your business, not just amidst the current novel Coronavirus pandemic. We recently hosted a webinar where we discussed everything you need to know about the Merit-Based Incentive Payment Systems (MIPS).

With the pandemic, as well as the changes and challenges the healthcare industry has faced in 2020, many practices are left wondering what to do with MIPS. Many of our clients have expressed concern over the risk of receiving a penalty as high as 9%, and others are looking to take advantage of the increased incentives this year. Therefore, it’s important to take a moment to decide where you stand and if any action needs to be taken to meet your MIPS goals. In this webinar, we discuss the options available for eligible providers, and the flexibility CMS has implemented to help providers.

Maggie Delcamp, RN, AZCOMP’s own EHR Specialist and MIPS Consultant, hosted a webinar including:

  • MIPS in a Minute Overview
  • Potential Financial Impact
  • 2019 Finalized Scores are In
  • Minimum Requirements for 2020
  • Hardship Application
  • MIPS Training & Assistance Available

Operations Have Changed, But Our Mission Remains the Same

We’re Facing Change Head-on and We Can Help You Face It, Too!

These days, people will be quick to tell you that the world is changing. And in many ways, there’s a lot of truth to that statement. The ripple effects of this new virus are far-reaching, causing people to adapt in ways that they’ve never had to consider before. AZCOMP is no exception to that. But behind the changes to how we do things, there’s something that remains the same: the reasons why we do things.

Our Mission as a Business is Identical to Yours.

We want to provide phenomenal service because we know that the well-being of many depends on it. We help medical professionals with their technology so they’re able to provide their patients with the medical services they need to stay healthy. When COVID-19 threatened to change the way our mission might be achieved, it was admittedly terrifying for everyone. But it’s been incredible to see that those changes haven’t gotten the best of us because the motivation behind what we do has remained untouched.

What we’ve discovered is that being productively collaborative is all about our willingness to communicate.

– Keven Cluff (General Manager)

Remote work can be a daunting prospect for businesses that are so collaborative. But what we’ve discovered is that being productively collaborative is all about our willingness to communicate. At AZCOMP, that willingness has not changed, no matter where each member of our team is located. Being dedicated to continued communication has allowed us to help our customers set up their own remote work systems and continue providing services to their patients.

When a medical office closes, it doesn’t mean patients can stop treatment or cancel consultations. There has to be a way for doctors to continue providing care even when they aren’t able to see their patients in person. Our team understood the importance of that fact from the moment the playing field changed, and we’ve taken on the responsibility of making sure medical professionals can still do the things their patients need them to do.

We’ve been helping offices set up telehealth services that allow doctors to continue “seeing” their patients and provide treatment plans. We’ve also helped practices set up systems so their internal communication can flourish. During this tumultuous time, no patient wants to feel like they’ve been forgotten about, and that’s why it’s been so important for medical offices to find a way to communicate en masse. Doing so may require the implementation of a whole new system, but if there’s one thing that all these scenarios have taught us, it’s that learning how to adapt may pave the way for exciting innovations in the future.

Our reason for wanting to help you hasn’t changed, no matter how much the world might be trying to change it.

– Keven Cluff (General Manager)

Throughout this journey, we’ve learned a lot of things we didn’t expect to learn about ourselves and our team. Going through a mental shift about the work you do, and going through it quickly is a challenge. But we’ve faced those challenges head-on and are ready to help you face them too. So, if you haven’t quite figured out how to adapt our office into a productive remote-work atmosphere or if you have new systems or software that you’d like to try, then don’t hesitate to reach out to us. That’s what we’re here for, just like before. Our reason for wanting to help you hasn’t changed, no matter how much the world might be trying to change it.

From Then to Now

A History of Collaboration and Care

We’ve Always Been Who We’ve Strived to Be

In March, AZCOMP celebrated 20 years as a company, and it’s been exciting to see us grow over that time. It began as a husband and wife team that pretty quickly added two additional employees. This team of four was doing its best to produce the work of 20 people. It seemed destined to succeed each and every year. Above all, the one thing that AZCOMP started with – and has continued to keep for 20 years – is its spirit of collaboration and care for what it does.

Loree Olsen, Customer Experience Manager, has been here from the beginning. Here is what she has to say about AZCOMP’s history of collaboration and care.

I’ve worn lots of hats during my time with AZCOMP. But back in 2001 when things were still just starting out, I was wearing a lot of those hats all at the same time, which can be expected with any new business. Having so many roles could have been an overwhelming prospect, but it actually didn’t feel that way. It was an exciting time full of possibilities that we always tried to take full advantage of. I attribute our success right from the start to having great leadership. Specifically, our owner always looked to outside sources for help in every area we weren’t experts in and always sought our advice from the leaders in our industry, continually striving to make us better and stronger in any way he could.

When you have leaders who invest everything they can right back into the company they’re trying to grow, you have the formula for success, and the rest of the team can’t help but jump on board.

– Loree Olsen

Then, somewhere down the road to growth, AZCOMP also realized it needed to define its true purpose. You might be thinking that’s something that should have been done from the beginning, and you’re probably right. Businesses are often formed with specific goals and purposes in mind. But when a business starts to grow and roles become more defined, things inevitably change. So it was necessary to sit down and take time to define what made us great, what made employees excited to come to work, what our clients loved most about us, and the vision we had for making a real difference in our clients’ lives. It was a pivotal time in our company’s history.

We sat down for a week and hashed things out. We talked about the work we did and what it meant for our clients, their families, and even our own families. Here’s what we concluded: When you work in the field of health care technology, you touch man more people than just the doctors’ offices where you implement software and systems. The job you do affects every person that patient has an impactful relationship with. That’s because the well-being of one person matters to more than just that person. The technology we provide ensures out clients can take care of patients to the best of their ability, protecting them from everything from drug interactions to early detection of disease. That patient has been our mother, our brother, our client, our friend. The work we help these offices do comes full circle at that point, and we’ve built a team that understands the importance and impact of that.

For us, it’s personal. That realization made our purpose crystal clear, everything we do day in and day out ultimately serves to “Empower small practices to deliver the BEST care.”

– Loree Olsen

This idea of growing and expanding upon who we are and who we’ve envisioned ourselves to be has never stopped since day one, over 20 years ago. I’ve seen it firsthand and played many different roles in many different departments during that time. For that reason, I have no doubt that we’ll continue down the path we’ve laid out for ourselves. So here’s to the next 20 years of “Delivering Phenomenal” to our clients so they can “Deliver Phenomenal” to their clients, too.

We Deliver Phenomenal

We Deliver Phenomenal So That Our Clients Can Too!

Our very first core value at AZCOMP is to “deliver phenomenal.” We put our values in order for a reason, and this one’s at the top because it’s the absolute crux of what we do. It helps our culture thrive, makes our clients happy, and, in turn, allows them to make their own clients happy.

Technology is the backbone of most businesses these days. If your tech isn’t working, it’s going to cause all kinds of problems, no matter what field you’re in. For AZCOMP, this tech is most often related to the medical field, so in many ways, it’s even more vital that it’s working correctly because it directly affects the well-being of the patients who are counting on it. That’s why we’re so adamant about making sure we provide absolutely phenomenal service every time.

“…We’re so adamant about making sure we provide absolutely phenomenal service every time.”

– Byron Adams

Just a few weeks ago, we met with a prospective client in their medical offices.

They wanted to switch IT companies because rather than their current company taking care of their IT issues for them, they would instead just tell their client how they could fix the issues themselves. This left us scratching our heads. You don’t see doctors telling their patients how to perform their own surgery. Doctors spend years getting an education and years treating patients so they can directly implement care and treatment because their patients are not equipped to provide their own care. It should be the same with any IT company; we’re trained to do our job, and we should be expected to do it. This client saw the value in having a technology partner who takes what it does seriously and makes sure it’s using that knowledge to give its clients the service that they can’t provide for themselves. In contrast, we had another meeting with a prospective client who was a bit more reluctant to let us do what we do best. This medical professional was handling all of his own IT, from system setup to troubleshooting. The problem is he wasn’t trained in IT practices. so he couldn’t provide himself and his staff the tools and support they needed to run an efficient business. We did an assessment and found that his system likely haven’t been working properly for years. During that time, he has created an environment of frustrated employees, which in turn, led to disappointed patients who weren’t getting the care or services they needed.

This is why delivering phenomenal is so important at AZCOMP. We strive every day to make sure our clients are using the best technology possible because that allows them to deliver phenomenal to their own clients.

“We’re experts at what we do so our clients can be experts at what they do.”

– Byron Adams

But it doesn’t stop there. We work hard every day to make sure we’re also delivering phenomenal within our own walls to our own team members. That’s because providing great service starts with fostering a culture that allows your team to thrive and also inspires them to help others thrive too. We make sure our own systems are running smoothly so we can do the work we’re trained to do, and do it in a way that makes us proud. You’d be amazed at how easily a happy mindset at work translates into providing service that makes your clients happy too.

It takes a lot of practice to figure out how to deliver phenomenal. It doesn’t happen overnight, and sometimes you have to reach out for a little help to really make sure you’re delivering something truly phenomenal. Here at AZCOMP, we work every day to help our clients see the value in reaching out to a technology partner that helps them do their best work.
